What is Alternative Family Care?

These are programs that provide respite care in someone else’s home. A host carer or family, who are often volunteers, provides respite care and friendship for your child or the person you care for.

Provides home based care respite to children with disabilities. Children and their families are linked with volunteer care givers who provide regular planned respite in their own homes, usually one weekend per month.

Who is it for? Children with a disability aged 6 - 12 years at time of referral. Living in Knox, Maroondah and Yarra Ranges.
Program Hours: Negotiable
Office Hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

EXTENDED FAMILIES AUSTRALIA

Provides volunteers who develop a supportive and caring relationship with a child with a disability and their family. The focus is on providing companionship and support for the child and family through regular visits in the family home or community settings, with a view to establishing an ongoing relationship.

The service also provides a social events program for children and families.

Who is it for? Children aged 0 - 18 years living in the Eastern Metro Region of Melbourne.
Program Hours: Flexible - negatiated between volunteers and families.
Office Hours: 8.45am - 3.15pm, Monday - Thursday.

INTERCHANGE INNER EAST – HOST PROGRAM

Interchange Inner East is a community based not-for-profit organisation which provides planned respite programs that are responsive to the changing needs of families and their children/young adults with disabilities. At present Interchange Inner East provides a range of programs each of which differ to suit individual needs. They are the Host Program, the Recreation Program, the Flexible Family Support Program and the Individual Care Program.

The Host Program provides families who have a child with a disability a regular break, by sharing the care of their child with other people – the host volunteers.
• To be eligible children must be 18 or under and live at home with their families.
• The care is provided in the volunteer family home, providing a combination of either regular planned day visits and/or some overnight stays.

Who is it for? Children aged 0 – 18 years living in the areas of Boroondara, Manningham, Monash & Whitehorse.
Program Hours: Variable.
Office Hours: 9.00am – 5.00pm, Monday - Friday.

INTERCHANGE OUTER EAST - HOST PROGRAM

A non-profit, community based organisation which provides support to families who have a child or a young person with a disability.

The Host Program matches a child with a disability, aged up to 18 years, with a volunteer host carer who shares their home with that child on a regular basis, ideally one weekend a month.

Who is it for? People aged up to 18 years living in the areas of Maroondah, Knox and Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Program Hours: Flexible.
Office Hours: 9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday - Friday.

YOORALLA - FAMILY BASED RESPITE

Offers families of a child with a disability the opportunity to have overnight respite care. The family is matched with an accredited caregiver family. Respite may take place any day of the week and at any time of year.

Who is it for? Children aged 6 - 12 years and are eligable to receive services under the Disability Act 2006
Program Hours: Seven days per week.
Office Hours: 9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday - Friday.

INTERCHANGE OUTER EAST - SPECIALISED CARE

A non-profit, community based organisation which provides support to families who have a child or a young person with a disability.

Out of Home Family Based respite where a caring family receive a reimbursement for out of pocket expenses while providing the care. Service can be purchased using brokerage dollars at $237.60 per 24 hours. Service provided in multiples of 24 hours only (not less than 24 hours). In some circumstances care can be provided in the home of the person with a disability. At least 2 weeks notice is required to set up and a Service Agreement must be provided by the purchasing agency.

Who is it for? People living in any area.
Program Hours: Flexible.
Office Hours: 9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday - Friday.
